This short course examines how law, policy, and institutions often reflect Eurocentric worldviews, marginalising local and indigenous perspectives. Participants will explore how cultural expertise—the specialised knowledge of cultural norms, practices, and histories—can be used to challenge these imbalances. Whether in the courtroom, in public administration, or within global organisations, cultural expertise provides a framework for recognising difference, amplifying silenced voices, and reshaping power dynamics.
Real-world case studies will bring theory to life, highlighting how cultural experts have played pivotal roles in legal disputes, asylum processes, land rights cases, and international justice systems. The course not only equips learners with analytical tools but also encourages them to question dominant narratives and build inclusive strategies for change.
This course was developed by Fatima Mukaddam and delivered for the first time at the University of Tirana on the 1st July 2025.
