Assistant Professor Dr Ibrahim Ozturk on K-Peritia Workshop in Paris 2024
I had the privilege of attending a remarkable meeting and workshop session titled “Cultural Heritage and International Commercial Arbitration” in Paris, to which I was invited by K-Peritia COST Action. The event took place at the prestigious Hôtel de Lauzun, located in the heart of Paris, on October 4, 2024—coinciding with the anniversary of the French Constitution of October 4, 1958, a date of great significance for the French people. Held in the historic 17th-century Hôtel de Lauzun, whose origins date back to 1659, the venue added an additional layer of enchantment to the already captivating discussions. The event was hosted at the Paris Institute for Advanced Study in collaboration with Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.
The event was expertly organized by Livia Holden and Dina Hadad, featuring insightful sessions that explored the role of cultural expertise in international arbitration and museum cases. These discussions were complemented by perspectives from the museum sector, providing a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the intersection of cultural expertise and from cultural heritage to law arbitration. During the round-table discussions, five key arguments were thoroughly examined, offering diverse viewpoints and stimulating deep, critical dialogue among participants. The exchange of ideas highlighted the complexities of applying cultural expertise within legal frameworks.
In the meantime, our global community continues to expand, now encompassing members from over 60 countries, further enriching the diversity of thought and collaboration in this ever-evolving field.
I placed particular emphasis on K-Peritia’s focus on “Cultural Expertise” which I found to be of paramount importance. The curiosity and engagement of the participants created a dynamic and stimulating atmosphere throughout the seamless execution of the workshop. Notably, a vast array of arguments and discussion topics emerged during the sessions, offering me fresh insights that will greatly enhance my approach to cultural expertise, museums, international arbitration, and the historical dimensions of these fields. My deepened understanding has further motivated me to raise awareness among my colleagues about the significance of cultural expertise and the positive impact of K-Peritia’s initiatives.
In my free time during Paris stay, I had the opportunity to explore numerous cultural landmarks in Paris, ranging from the Louvre Museum and Musée d’Orsay to the Palais Garnier Opera House, the Eiffel Tower, the Tuileries Garden, and the Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre. My visits also included the Palace of Versailles, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Musée Rodin, along with many charming cafés and historic sites along the Seine River.
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to K-Peritia and to help expand its community. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with fellow participants in many future events.
